Children's Sports & Fitness Expo
The Children's Sports & Fitness Expo is our annual signature event! The impact of this event lasts a lifetime but we can only provide this service with the help of our community partners, wonderful volunteers, and public and private support. Please consider a donation - any amount helps and 100% of your tax deductible donation goes directly to our programs.
In response to the alarming incidence of obesity among children age 5-14, in 2004 Body Sculpt of New York created the Children’s Sports & Fitness Expo. The Children’s Sports & Fitness Expo has three goals:
1) to be a mechanism that energizes an entire community
2) to foster the regular and consistent engagement in physical exercise and
3) to raise the awareness about the benefits of good nutrition and healthy eating.
The long-term goal of this program is to develop ongoing programs throughout New York City and to eventually replicate the project nationwide. The Expo gives young people an opportunity to participate in over 25 sports clinics, health screenings and nutrition workshops – at no cost. During the Expo, children and their families are exposed to activities, programs and services that will help them to become more physically fit thereby reducing the risk of obesity in their lives.
The Expo has a proven track record as being able to serve as an effective intervention that can contribute to behavior modification and increased awareness about the importance of regular physical activity and proper nutrition. Activities include: gymnastics, basketball, football, soccer, baseball, fencing, archery, hula hoop, volleyball, tennis, golf, hip hop, Zumba and much more. These activities are taught by certified and/or licensed exercise and nutrition instructors.
To ensure that children participate in more than one activity, we make it a requirement for each child attending to participate in 2 sports activities, a nutrition clinic and a health screening prior to receiving a gift bag filled with product donations from our corporate and community partners. By incentivizing the event, it will ensure that children not only experience activities they otherwise would not have been exposed to, but that they walk away with nutrition education that can benefit them for years to come.
The Health screenings are conducted by local area hospitals and consist of:
BMI (Body Mass Index)
Although the Expo is primarily an event for children, we also provide exercise activities for adults such as Cardio Kickboxing, Zumba and more. We also encourage adults to take advantage of the health screenings that are available.
The Expo was initially held in Harlem for 4 years but due to the overwhelming response, expanded into the borough of Brooklyn in 2008 and as recently as October, 2015 we held the first Children’s Sports & Fitness Expo in the Bronx.
